Being a college full-ride scholarship recipient was the easy part.

Giving speeches on how the scholarship impacted my life was not.

For some reason, leaders in my community believed I was capable of sharing my point of view of receiving a prestigious award to my future successors and fellow peers. At the age of 15 filled with immaturity was not a definitive factor in this matter. They had their wish.

I remember walking towards the stage in front of about 50 people and a camera to share my experience of receiving something that was honestly life-changing. They asked me to share that experience in both English and Spanish.

My voice creaked as I switched from English to Spanish — with my speed increasing and repeated eye contact with certain members of the audience way too obvious.

“I do not belong here on this stage,” said my speeding heart rate.

Ryan Holiday specializes in the brave in Courage Is Calling. He identifies ways we can release fear in our minds to achieve the impossible because, at the end of the day, we are only as happy as our lives appear to be.
